About Richard Clarke

~

I love to write fantastical stories grounded in believable characters set in worlds just a step away from our own. I am fascinated by questions surrounding the nature of reality. Subsequently, my characters live through tumultuous times where reality is not as solid as it appears to be, where wondrous and perilous ways of being exist just beyond the veil of our senses, where infinite possibility and consequence lie starkly side by side …

I began writing in 1995 and over the years have completed five pieces of varying length.

The Beautiful People and Fever were my first two stories written in the nineties. The Beautiful People was a full length science fiction novel and Fever was a shorter, more contemporary piece of work. I call these older stories my study pieces, for I was learning the craft of fiction writing as well as along the way stumbling upon the subjects and ideas that interested me. Those early stories had some great characters and some excellent ideas and scenes, however, I was just starting out and they do read like they are by a first time writer.

Descent and The Brief Life of Tia Green were my third and fourth stories respectively and were written in recent years. I was studying the thirties and forties when I wrote Descent and was heavily influenced by the period; I often describe Descent as the second world war in space. The Brief Life of Tia Green is a shorter story and it saw the first tender shoots of new influences and drivers, questions about the nature of reality were coming to the fore.

I recently completed my fifth story, Meridian, a 90,000 word science fiction novel centred on the collapse of reality, it is a breakneck ride with memorable characters, a story I am deeply passionate about, and it is the novel I hope and pray will make it onto bookshelves.
